Attico San Marco is the kind of address Venetians keep to themselves: the top floor of a Gothic palazzetto two bridges from Piazza San Marco, crowned by a private altana — the traditional wooden roof terrace — with a 360° view of bell towers and chimney pots.
Under the beams, the apartment is calm and warm: Rubelli fabrics, Murano glass, a deep sofa for the blue hour when the crowds drain away and the city goes quiet. Two bedrooms each have their own marble bath.
The vaporetto at Santa Maria del Giglio is three minutes on foot. We arrange water taxis from the airport, skip-the-line guides, and a gondolier who still sings.
